Boschendal Village Urban Design Framework and Architectural Guidelines
Rooted in the cultural landscape of Boschendal Farm, this project reimagines village living within a historic agrarian setting. As part of the team responsible for shaping the urban design framework and architectural indicators, the approach was grounded in a deep respect for heritage while looking forward to sustainable, community-centred growth.
The proposal envisions a compact, walkable village — a place where diverse public spaces, vibrant streets, and varied architecture meet the rhythms of surrounding farmland. Anchored by a lively farmers market square and a new high street, the village weaves together homes, shops, galleries, restaurants, educational facilities, and civic amenities to serve both residents and the wider community.
Agricultural fields are drawn up to the edges of the settlement, reinforcing a clear spatial boundary that resists sprawl and protects the integrity of the landscape. Tree-lined avenues, verandas, colonnades, and thoughtfully scaled streetscapes create a setting that is both human and timeless, fostering connection, safety and a sense of belonging. Importantly, the design avoids gated enclaves — embracing instead an open civic realm that invites authentic engagement and shared ownership.
The vision balances history and future, landscape and settlement, public and private — all in service of a village that feels as if it has always belonged.
The Urban design Framework and Indicators was done in association with Philip Briel.
